Ashes and wine

Ashes and Wine is what is left over from the night before. The wine that was not finished, and the ashes that are left in the fireplace after the night. Asking someone (sweetheart) if their relationship is ashes and wine means that  "is it over? Is the only thing left, the ashes in the fireplace and the wine that was not enjoyed?".

Ashes and Wine are the things that are left over when the night is done. When the cigarette has been smoked and when the wine has been consumed but there is still always those few drops left in the glass. Is the relationship finished like those ashes and wine?
